North Idaho Wildlife Viewing & Photography

  • North Idaho is a wildlife photographer's paradise and Mountain Light Retreat is located right in the heart of it! Wide expanses of boreal forests, cedar bogs, river basins, prairies, marshes and lakes offer diversified habitats to the extreme for a wide variety of species. Every one of these natural features can be found within a 30 minute drive from our vacation rental property. The predominant species most visitors come to the area to see include elk, moose, trumpeter swans, bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, a variety of owl species and a large diversity of migratory and non-migratory bird life. We are blessed with such a unique nature sanctuary all around us and we invite you to experience the wildlife diversity of North Idaho!

    Wildlife at Mountain Light Retreat

Mountain Light is a wildlife haven. The 40 acre property is surrounded by hundreds of acres of undeveloped mountain property adjoining hundreds of thousands of acres of National Forest land. With such expansive habitat, a large variety of wildlife call our area home. Wildlife sightings are a regular part of the experience at our retreat (for those that are quiet and observant of course). Our expansive upper level deck looks out over the property offering an excellent perch for photographers to capture wildlife wandering throughout the property and beyond. We regularly see elk, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, roughed grouse, bluebirds, hummingbirds, red-tailed hawks and a large variety of small mammals and songbirds. Great-Horned Owls nest throughout the property and can be heard most nights and early mornings. There is a 1/2 mile nature hiking loop on the property that runs south down the ridge from the main house, and then dips down into a small creek basin. The trail is an excellent opportunity for birders to document over 30 species of songbirds that frequent the property each spring and summer. We highly recommend an early-morning loop at sunrise! We have a few wildlife food plots scattered throughout the property to encourage the health and happiness of our wild neighbors. Each season we plan clover, oats, alfalfa, etc. Even our front year is a wildlife attracting food plot of rye-grasses and clover!
