The Trail of the Coeur d' Alenes is a nearby 72 mile masterpiece of a blacktop-paved biking, hiking and rollerblading trail. From Solitude Mountain Retreat, drive East on Interstate 90 to the Rose Lake Exit. There are a number of trailheads that are well-marked just off county road 3 heading South of Rose Lake. All trailheads are located right on the banks of the scenic Coeur d'Alene River running North to South into Lake Coeur d'Alene itself. Be sure to stop at the Rose Lake Café and have a sandwich, slice of pie or a hot cup of coffee either before or after your outing. The great part about rollerblading the Trail of the Coeur d' Alenes is that it is well-maintained with clean black-top with little imperfections. Also, being an old railroad grade, it is perfectly level in all locations with no steep inclines or declines. It is a great fitness trail that accommodates all abilities. We suggest starting at the Bull Run Lake Trailhead just South of the town of Rose Lake, take a left (East) from highway 3 over a one-lane bridge crossing the Coeur d'Alene River. The trailhead is a paved parking area with ample space for numerous vehicles. Set out South of the parking area on your rollerblades. This route takes you past many scenic views of the rivers and small, marshy lakes teeming with waterfowl and other bird life. Beautiful photo ops of sunsets can be seen from the trail, so an evening trip is encouraged along with cooler temps versus mid-day. Other great trailheads further down the road include the Medimont Trailhead within the "Chain of Lakes." As an alternative if you prefer to rollerblade closer to the Coeur d'Alene city center, the city has a phenomenal lakeside paved trail that follows the lake's shoreline although this tends to be a much busier route during the summer months versus the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes.
